EASO: in January, the number of asylum applications in the EU remained similar to that of December

European Asylum Support Office (EASO) informs that, compared to December last year, this January the number of asylum applications lodged in the European Union remained almost unchanged (from 39 333 in December to 39 975 in January) with total numbers remaining far below the statistics of the first months in 2020.

In January, most applications were lodged by Syrian, Afghan, Pakistani, Iraqi and Nigerian nationals. It is noticeable that during the reported period, there was an increase in the number of repeated asylum applications.
