FRONTEX: in March, the number of attempts to illegally cross the external EU border increased

European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) reports that, compared to the same period last year, this March the number of attempts to illegally cross the external European Union border increased by a total of 4 percent.

In January, February and March of 2021, most illegal attempts (in total – almost 8 450) were registered in the Central Mediterranean route, where, if compared to the same period last year, the extent of irregular migration has grown by as much as 122 percent. Mostly, attempts to illegally cross the EU border in this region were registered among the Tunisian and Ivory Coast nationals.
