“Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė is not in favour of the proposal to extend the detention period for irregular migrants from six to 12 months.

“The government will look into what adjustments could be made to this law, but we really wouldn’t want that to become some sort of automatic extension of the period, where somebody thinks we will just extend it and that will solve the problem (…). There are solutions in other countries when people have a special status and are not granted asylum and also are not detained, so we are looking into those practices and we plan to submit proposals to the Seimas in October,” Šimonytė said.”
