European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) reports that, compared to the same period last year, this February the number of attempts to irregularly cross the external European Union border increased by approximately a quarter.
In January-February, 2022, most irregular attempts (in total – 11 723) were registered on the Western Balkans route, where, if compared to the same period last year, the extent of irregular migration has grown by 98 percent. Mostly, attempts to irregularly cross the EU border in this region were registered among nationals of Syria and Afghanistan.
Note: this statistics does not include people fleeing Ukraine due to Russian invasion.
