EASO: in February, 2022, significant increase of asylum applications lodged by Ukrainians

European Asylum Support Office (EASO) informs that, compared to January, in February, 2022, the number of asylum applications in the European Union grew insignificantly (from 58.498 applications in January to 60.819 applications in February), but there was a sharp increase of applications lodged by the Ukrainian citizens (five times more than in January).

This statistics can be essentially explained by the Russian launched invasion to Ukraine on February 24. It should be noted that the possibility to apply for the EU temporary protection for people fleeing the war in Ukraine was only activated on March 4. According to preliminary data, the protection was granted to 2.3 million people so far.

In February, most asylum applications were lodged by nationals of Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ukraine.
