Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office publishes its torture prevention report

Erika Leonaite, the Chief of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office, published the torture prevention report. The document was drafted after a visit to Medininkai Foreigners’ Registration Centre.

After assessing the circumstances established during the inspections, the Seimas Ombudsperson reported that the long-term detention of migrants in the residential container camp of Medininkai Foreigners’ Registration Centre is equivalent to degrading treatment. The document criticized the living conditions, overly stringent restrictions of migrants’ freedoms, and shortage of available social workers and psychologists. The report also pointed out that Medininkai Foreigners’ Registration Centre does not properly ensure the migrants’ right to submit requests, complaints, and apply for other type of assistance.
